As I was driving around campus tonight, I saw a billion of these street markings:

And realized that “xing” here actually means “x-ing”, as in “crossing”. 

I guess I’m a little slow, but I had been reading them as 行 (xíng).  The odd thing is that it actually works, because 行 means “way”.  What are the chances of that??
